Ash Barty faces a tantalising clash with reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek after advancing to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open.

World No.1 Barty needed almost two hours to dispatch world No.80 Tamara Zidansek 6-4 1-6 6-3 on Saturday, keeping her impressive red clay winning streak alive.

Preparing for the looming French Open at Roland Garros, where she won her maiden grand slam title in 2019, Barty is coming off a clay title win in Stuttgart last weekend.

Her next opponent is Polish teenager Swiatek, who won the French Open last year in Barty's absence as the Australian sat out most of the season due to coronavirus concerns.

It will be the first career meeting for the pair.

World No.14 Swiatak progressed to their round of 16 clash in Madrid with a 6-3 6-3 win over Germany's Laura Siegemund.
