John Peers' doubles exit has left Samantha Stosur and wheelchair competitors Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson as Australia's last US Open title hopefuls.

John Peers' quest for a second grand-slam doubles crown has come to an end with a US Open semi-final defeat in New York.

On a high after collecting an Olympic bronze medal in mixed doubles with Ash Barty in Tokyo, Peers was hoping to add the US Open title to his 2017 Australian Open trophy won with Henri Kontinen.

Alas, Peers and Slovakian Filip Polasek lost their semi-final at Flushing Meadows 6-3 3-6 6-4 on Friday.

Peers' exit leaves Samantha Stosur and wheelchair competitors Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson as Australia's last remaining title hopefuls in the Big Apple.

Chasing her sixth grand-slam doubles crown, and second with Zhang Shuai, Stosur and her Chinese partner face American Desirae Crawczyk and Chile's Alexa Guarachi on Saturday for a place in the final.

A second women's doubles title in New York, having reigned in 2005 with Lisa Raymond, would be a fitting way to mark the 10th anniversary of Stosur's 2011 singles final triumph over Serena Williams.

After winning the quad singles at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the Paralympics, Alcott is striving to become the first player in the 40-plus-year history of the professional wheelchair circuit to claim a "golden slam".

Alcott opens his campaign American Bryan Barten, while Davidson plays Brit Andy Lapthorne.

Alcott and Davidson are also the top seeds in the four-team men's quad doubles competition.
