US Open champion Raducanu loses in Austria

3 minute read

US Open champion Emma Raducanu's breakout WTA Tour season has come to a tame close, losing to outsider Wang Zinyu at the Linz Open in Austria.

Emma Raducanu's stellar season has come to a disappointing end with defeat to qualifier Wang Xinyu in Austria, on the day the identity of the Briton's new coach was revealed.

Top seed at a WTA Tour event for the first time at the Upper Austria Ladies, Raducanu started badly, battled back, then suffered a late injury before losing 6-1 6-7 (0-7) 7-5 to 106th-ranked Wang.

Raducanu, who needed treatment for a leg injury after being broken to go down 5-4 in the final set, saved a match point in the subsequent game before breaking back.

But then faded as the 20-year-old Wang closed out the victory.

Earlier it was reported world No.20 Raducanu, who will be 19 on Saturday, will announce German Torben Beltz as her new coach.

The 44-year-old Beltz worked with Angelique Kerber when she won the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016.

They reunited for this season but Kerber announced on Monday they would not be working together in 2022.

Raducanu has been looking for a coach with extensive experience on the WTA Tour, having called time on her arrangement with Andrew Richardson who helped her become the first qualifier to win the US Open in September.
