Booms Quinella Doomben 10,000

3 minute read

Eagle Farm trainer Tony Gollan enjoyed a moment he will never forget as Spirit Of Boom led in a Doomben 10,000 stable quinella last Saturday.

Spirit Of Boom has been a model of consistency this campaign and went into the Doomben 10,000 after seconds in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) and the BTC Cup (1200m).

Earlier in his prep, Spirit Of Boom had already confirmed himself a stud career after claiming a maiden Group 1 win of the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

The rising seven-year-old looked to have a great chance of maximising his value in the Doomben 10,000.

Spirit Of Boom capitalised.

From barrier 2, the pair enjoyed an ideal run in transit as they settled sixth on the fence.

Always travelling well, jockey Michael Rodd barged Spirit Of Boom into clear running soon after straightening and went about reeling in early leader Buffering and stablemate Temple Of Boom.

Spirit Of Boom strode to the front 50m from home and claimed the Doomben 10,000 ahead of brother Temple Of Boom with Buffering weakening late for third.

Again Spirit Of Boom proved himself in a tight Group 1 finish with less than a length separating the first four across the line as was the case in the William Reid Stakes (1200m).

Spirit Of Boom’s latest winning display was awarded a Timeform rating of 120, a pound clear of his previous peak most notably run to when claiming the William Reid Stakes.

The run comes in below the prior five year winning average of the Doomben 10,000 taken out during that period by the likes of Apache Cat, Hot Danish and Epaulette.

With retirement looming, connections have decided their star will have one more race start.

The Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 7 will be Spirit Of Boom’s swansong and sadly the rising seven-year-old has plenty standing in the way of him and a fitting farewell.

Buffering has been sent to the spelling paddock which will result in Spirit Of Boom claiming the number 1 saddlecloth and carrying 58kg.

More than two decades go by before finding a horse which possessed a similar profile as Spirit Of Boom heading into a Stradbroke Handicap.

Only Rough Habit in 1992 has carried more than 56kg to Stradbroke Handicap glory.

The Doomben 10,000 a fortnight earlier regularly possesses the subsequent winner of the Stradbroke Handicap however the last to claim the double was Campaign King in 1988.

A statistic in Spirit Of Boom's favour at the very least is four of the past six Stradbroke Handicap winners have been six-year-olds back to Mr Baritone in 2008.

Regardless of the result Spirit Of Boom yields in the Eagle Farm feature, the Sequalo entire will bow out having provided connections with an abundance of fond memories.

With nine wins and 20 placings from 51 starts, Spirit Of Boom has amassed in excess of $2.3million in prizemoney.

With a stud career based in Queensland also due to commence in the spring, the initial $90,000 investment at the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS Sale has proven most astute.

As was the case last Saturday, only his older half brother Temple Of Boom got close.

A ten out of ten ride by Michael Rodd made the difference in a tight four-way finish to give Spirit Of Boom a much deserved hometown Group One victory ahead of retiring to Eureka Stud. Rodd settled Spirit Of Boom in sixth position on the fence about four and a half lengths from the leader Buffering who crossed to lead on the fence. He pushed out on cornering into the clear and came with a determined run to get up late to deny his stablemate and older half brother Temple Of Boom by a half neck. Temple Of Boom raced in third position on the fence. He was momentarily held up for a run before pushing out underneath Hot Snitzel to get into the clear at the 250m. He picked up well taking the lead together with his half-brother at the 50m to only go under narrowly. A good effort. Buffering ran well in defeat once again. He was used up to lead from his wide barrier (8). He turned for home in front and kicked strongly in the straight going down fighting by half a length. It was a good effort at a distance that is beyond his optimum trip. Rebel Dane put in a great effort. He was eased from his wide barrier to settle down a clear last. He commenced a three wide moved from the 700m before taking the home turn on the outside of the field. He came with a big finish to slightly die on his run in the last 50m. A very good effort considering the task he was set. Knoydart was also good in defeat. He came from third last one off the fence before being shuffled back to last approaching the home turn. He came wide in the straight and was finishing on well for a good fifth, only beaten a length and three quarters. *ANZ
