The Scone Timeform Wrap: May 12

3 minute read

The Scone Wrap featuring a race by race recap of key performers and ones to watch from the Scone meeting on May 12.

All roads lead to Sydney for winners on Day 2 of the Scone Carnival with the meeting an ideal launch pad for Brisbane Winter Campaigns.

Moss Trip and Osborne Bulls each impressed and won’t look out of place in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, dual Group 1 winner Terravista made a low key exit from racing with his retirement announced after a well beaten ninth in the Ortensia Stakes.

Race 3: Pretty In Pink - Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m)

There was a flood of money for Pretty In Pink and it was justified.

The run returned a Timeform rating of 103p.

John O’Shea clearly has a bit of time for her. He’s staying patient though. It sounds like she’ll be spelled and brought back for the spring.

Invictus Salute was good in second. She’s had Blinkers on for her past two runs. She’s found a few gears in that time.

Race 4: Moss Trip - Restricted Listed Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m)

Moss Trip gave them a massive head start into the straight but she was still too good. She’s run to a Timeform rating of 111p.

Some nice 3YO’s have won this race. Sincero and Cosmic Endeavour are the pick of them.

Sincero went on to win a Stradbroke. Cosmic Endeavour went up to Brisbane that winter and claimed the Dane Ripper Stakes and the Tatt’s Tiara.

Moss Trip can easily follow in her footsteps.

Assimilate was good in second. He is inconsistent but definitely talented. Races like the Fred Best Classic and Queensland Guineas could be options for him over the next month.

Race 5: In Good Time - Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m)

In Good Time has gone from a Benchmark 70 at Tamworth to a Stakes race and taken it in her stride.

We’ve got the Time Thief filly running to a rating of 92.

Tracey Bartley post race said she’s probably going to spell now. Full credit to him for staying so grounded.

Sheikha was great first up. She can definitely run a race up in Brisbane over the coming six weeks.

The favourites, Demerara and Sasso Corbaro simply got way too far back in a big field.

Race 6: Osborne Bulls - Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m)

Rachel King was as cool as a cucumber waiting for the gaps to emerge. Osborne Bulls did the rest when they did.

We’ve given the run a Timeform rating of 115.

They are talking Stradbroke with him now. He’d carry no weight in the Stradbroke so he’s in that race up to his ears off 115.

Red Excitment was great first up and should improve up over a mile and beyond.

Invincible Gem was massively unlucky. She travelled wide with no cover throughout and did well to run third. She’s nominated for features up in Brisbane. That run on Saturday should get her ticket north booked.

Race 7: Siren’s Fury - Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m)

Siren’s Fury is two wins from two runs this prep. She got that all important black type on Saturday and ran to a Timeform rating of 103.

Jason Coyle post race said this was a Grand Final for her. Considering that, it will be interesting to see if the Myboycharlie filly can build on the run.

She has to go to Brisbane off that win. Prompt Response ran second in this race last year.

She went on to win the Dane Ripper Stakes four weeks later.

Schism in second. That was her first start going clockwise. She’ll be better for it. The Ciaron Maher-trained mare is racing consistently and picked up some valuable black type as well. She was stakes placed before Saturday. Now she’s Group placed which definitely has a much nicer ring to it.

Race 8: To Excess - Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m)

To Excess brought up a stakes double for Tracey Bartley. He’s made a solid sprint field look pretty second rate.

We’ve got him running to a Timeform rating of 109.

His next start will be in an 1100m Open Handicap at Randwick. To Excess was only a Benchmark 84 horse prior to Saturday so he can get one more win before tackling stakes company again.

Le Cordon Bleu will likely head there as well. That was an eye catcher second up.

Ninth was Terravista, beaten 6.5 lengths.

It was announced post race the dual Group 1 winner would be retired after a career which netted 11 wins and seven placings from 32 starts along with more the $2.6million in prizemoney.

Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Moss Trip is racing in top form this preparation, now winning four of her six starts. She settled back in second last place in the 11-horse field from her wide barrier (10), tracking a quick tempo before going deep to make her bid on straightening. She then sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 100m and then went on to score impressively. Her stablemate Assimilate raced back in eighth place, improved on turning for home, took a while to wind up and then came with a late run to take second in a sound performance. Frolic remained in seventh place to the home turn and made late ground for third, just in advance Reflectivity who led the field until halfway down the straight before finishing (2.6 lengths) fourth while the favourite Villermont had a good trip in fifth place, briefly looked dangerous on straightening but then disappointed over the closing stages battling on to hold (4.4 lengths) fifth.
