Timeform Review - 2018 Doomben Cup Day

3 minute read

Comin’ Through has bounced back from a disappointing effort in the Hollindale Stakes to claim victory in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained runner had no luck when caught wide throughout in the Hollindale, finishing sixth behind Oregon’s Day but under an inspired ride by Michael Walker was able to turn it around to win the first Group 1 of his career.

From the wide barrier, Walker was able to settle midfield with cover before coming wide on the turn, running on strongly to edge out Egg Tart in second with Ambitious third.

Comin’ Through returned a Timeform figure of 121, equal to his previous best achieved n the Queen Elizabeth Stakes behind Winx during the Sydney Carnival.

The four-year-old gelding ran two pounds above 2017 winner Sense Of Occasion and slightly below the previous two winners Our Ivanhowe and Pornichet who both returned a Timeform figure of 123.

Comin’ Through had been building nicely this campaign with a win in the Ajax and a placing in the Doncaster Mile before running fifth to Winx in the Queen Elizabeth behind four genuine Group 1 winners.

Despite a modest effort in the Hollindale Stakes, Comin’ Through clearly had excuses on that occasion and was able to secure a much deserved Group 1 success before what is likely to be a big spring carnival for him.

Of the beaten runners Egg Tart was good in second running to a new career peak Timeform figure of 116 with the favourite Ambitious in third and running to 118.

Earlier in the day Eawase showed she is a two-year-old to keep an eye on following a nice win in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m).

The Team Snowden-trained runner found herself well back in the field from the wide draw and was able to make good ground in the straight to run out a one and a half length winner over Granny Red Shoes in second with Sizzling Belle third.

In what was her second win in a row, Eawase returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 104+, eight pounds above her win at Randwick the start prior.

The daughter of Sebring measures up well to recent winners, and is the equal highest rated winner of the race since its first renewal in 2010 (Lancaster Stakes).

Eawase ran six pounds above 2017 winner Cellargirl and the same as 2016 winner My Country who beat Invincibella.

Peter Snowden indicated his charge will more than likely head towards the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben on June 9.

The last filly to win the JJ Atkins was Linky Dink in 2009 with Aloisia going close when runner up to Capital Gain last year.

Chris Waller-trained stablemates fought out the finish with victory going to the consistent Comin' Through who scored his first Group One win after being placed twice at that level previously. Michael Walker did well in settling in seventh place (one off the rails) from the outside barrier, before improving (deep) from the 600m. He challenged at the 200m and then finished too well to score by a short neck in a solid effort, his first win over 2000m. Egg Tart had a good trip in sixth place on the rails, improved nicely (between runners) at the home turn, took the lead approaching the 200m and then battled gamely for a very good second. Ambitious raced in third last place in the 11-horse field, moved up (between runners) rounding the home turn, went to third at the 100m and kept running on well to take the minor placing in a solid effort. Abbey Marie raced in second last place, went deep at the home turn, moved up well at the 200m and she fought well from that point for fourth, beaten less than two lengths. The favourite Oregon's Day had a good trip in fifth place, one off the rails, before moving up dangerously nearing the home turn. But she only battled from that point for (two lengths) fifth after appearing to have had every chance.
