Futurity Stakes
Australia | FEATURE RACE GUIDE
History
The Futurity Stakes is a Group 1 race for open class horses usually run over 1400m at Caulfield conducted by the Melbourne Racing Club.
First run in 1898, the Futurity Stakes was first won by Resolute.
The Futurity Stakes is a WFA race run on the same day as the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes and the G1 Oakleigh Plate.
Initially a 1400m race, it was run at the mile from 2006 to 2010 but reverted to 1400m again after that.
It was run at Flemington in 1996, when won by Star Dancer, due to the reconstruction of Caulfield and also run there during WWII. Similarly it was held at Sandown in 2023 due to track renovations.
The Futurity Stakes follows the CF Orr Stakes run the fortnight before and leads into races like Australian Cup at Flemington or onto Sydney for races like the George Ryder, Doncaster Mile and All Aged Stakes.
It was worth $750,000 in 2024.
Fillies and mares hadn't won from Mannerism in 1992 to Aqua D'Amore in 2007 but then won with Typhoon Tracy, More Joyous, Suavito, Alizee, Probabeel and Sierra Sue since.
The CF Orr Stakes/Futurity Stakes double has been done in recent times by Mr Brightside (2024), Black Heart Bart (2017), Moment Of Change (2014), All Too Hard (2013), Typhoon Tracy (2010) Yell (2003), Desert Sky (2001), Primacy (1994) and Vo Rogue (1998).
Other notable winners of the Futurity Stakes include Gothic, Amounis, Phar Lap, Ajax (x3), Bernborough, San Domenico, Lord, Todman, Sky High, Wenona Girl, Gunsynd, Manikato (x4), Campaign King, Rubiton, Vo Rogue, Zedative, Schillaci (x2), Mouawad, Testa Rossa, Fields Of Omagh, Niconero (x2) Typhoon Tracy, More Joyous, Brave Smash, Alizee, Probabeel, Alligator Blood and Mr Brightside.
