The Irish Oaks is a Group 1 race run under Set Weight conditions for three year old fillies at the Curragh conducted by the Curragh Racecourse for Horse Racing Ireland.
The Irish Oaks is run over a mile and a half. It was first run in 1895 and was won by Sapling.
The fillies often run in both the Epsom Oaks and Irish version at the Curragh but they are six weeks apart.
Early versions of the Irish Oaks were over the mile but it was lengthened to the traditional trip in 1915.
The first to do the English Oaks/Irish Oaks double was Masaka in 1948. Enable did it again in 2017.
Several grand open class gallopers did win the Oaks including Ouija Board, Snow Fairy and Enable who ended her 3yo year winning the Arc. Sea Of Class went mighty close to doing that double in 2018.
Most Irish Oaks winners have been ridden by Johnny Murtagh with six and Sir Michael Stoute has trained most with six too.
The Irish Oaks is worth €400,000 in 2019.
Notable winners of the Irish Oaks include Sea Of Class (2018), Enable (2017), Seventh Heaven (2016), Blue Bunting (2011), Snow Fairy (2010), Sariska (2009), Peeping Fawn (2007), Alexandrova (2006), Ouija Board (2004), Dance Design (1996), Unite (1987), Blue Wind (1981), Fair Salinia (1978), Juliette Marny (1975), Dahlia (1973) and Altesse Royale (1971).
The 2018 Irish Oaks was won by Sea Of Class from Forever Together and Mary Tudor.
