Carr gets her full house of feature cups

3 minute read

Star jockey Siggy Carr secured the full house of Tasmania’s feature cups when John Blacker’s former South Australian gelding Super Swoop powered his way to an emphatic win in the Cressy Chaff Cutters Jim Osborne Longford Cup on Saturday.

Carr went into the race having won a Devonport Cup aboard Geegees Goldengirl, a Hobart Cup on Geegees Blackflash and last year's Launceston Cup aboard the Blacker-trained Glass Warrior.

"I am rapt to have finally won a Longford Cup and I have to thank John Blacker and the owners for having faith in me to deliver today," Siggy Carr said.

"This is the race I've always wanted to win and while it might not be the most prestigious in terms of prize money, it is incredibly special.

"Super Swoop was going to win a long way out and John had him in great order for the race."

Super Swoop ($9 into $3.30) settled near the rear of the field while Mi Keri Pi set a cracking pace in front with the favourite Encosta Fiorente ($2.10 out to $3) third and travelling sweetly.

Apprentice Taylor Johnstone called on the favourite to make her move 600m from home and the John Luttrell-trained mare looked to cruise to the leaders, but when Perun forged to the lead and Super Swoop joined in, those who invested in the favourite were turning their tickets into confetti.

When Carr called on her charge for the big effort Super Swoop forged to the lead and went on to score comfortably from Perun ($16) with So Astounding ($4.80) a game third.

"I love winning this race because it is my hometown cup and I'll never get sick of winning it," Blacker said.

Blacker accepted with five from his stable including Swoop Dog and Argyle Beach, but when they were scratched so they can race in Devonport on Wednesday, Super Swoop became the stable's best winning chance.

"When we opted to head to Devonport with Swoop Dog and Argyle Beach, I thought Super Swoop could win the race and I also thought General Maintenance and Costero could run well.

"We've got a good result and I'm hoping the stable can do well again on Wednesday at Devonport."

Blacker said Super Swoop would be aimed at the Night Cup in Launceston with the view of sneaking into the Launceston Cup.
