More Suspensions For Bowman And Williams

Champion jockeys Hugh Bowman and Craig Williams have both been suspended for the second time during Melbourne Cup week at Flemington.

The pair were outed at the Oaks meeting on Thursday for careless riding along with young gun Beau Mertens.

Bowman and Williams both incurred suspensions at Tuesday's Melbourne Cup meeting. Each received 11 meetings respectively and both appealed with Williams' having his sentence reduced to eight meetings.

Bowman's appeal, heard on Wednesday, was dismissed.

On Thursday Williams, riding Sworn Evidence in the DrinkWise Plate, received an eight-meeting suspension for shifting ground near the 300-metre mark, inconveniencing Ben Melham aboard That Rings A Bell.

Williams' suspensions will be served end-on-end, meaning he will next be free to ride Wednesday, November 22.

Bowman was given a five-meeting suspension for careless riding aboard So Splendid, also in the first race on the card.

It will be added onto his current suspension, meaning he will next be free to ride November 22, in Japan where he is headed for a short-term contract in the lead-up to Christmas.

Mertens was suspended for nine meetings for careless riding aboard Elusive Melody, in that passing the 200-metre mark, he allowed his mount to shift into the path of Fleeting Feeling (Luke Currie).

He will keep rides on Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington on Saturday before serving his suspension.

He will miss Zipping Classic Day at Sandown Saturday week too, before being free to ride Saturday night at Cranbourne for the City of Casey Tricodes night.Racing And Sports
