The state border closures have not prevented Sydney trainer Joe Pride from sending smart stayer Stockman north to raid the Queensland coffers in the Listed Caloundra Cup

While the COVID-19 restrictions mean neither Pride nor his staff can travel interstate, the horse will be well cared for by Brisbane-based co-trainers Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted, who like Pride train for Stockman's owners Proven Thoroughbreds

"I've sent him to Steve O'Dea who has horses for (Proven Thoroughbred's director) Jamie Walter. I've done it before and it works out absolutely fine," Pride said.

A last-start winner of the McKell Cup at Rosehill, Stockman was in contention to back-up in last Saturday's Stayer's Cup in Sydney but would have had to contend with a big weight.

Pride decided this weekend's Caloundra Cup (2400m) was a better option and with the track rated in the heavy range and the early scratching of the Bjorn Baker-trained Parry Sound, he is only growing in confidence.

"He's just a tough horse. He ran three weeks in a row then he had a fortnight between those last two runs and he'd been jumping out of his skin, and again this time," Pride said.

"He's had two weeks between runs again and he's in great order.

"I'm really happy with him and the race has come up absolutely perfect. I see Bjorn (Baker) took his horse out this morning, so it looks a lovely race for him."

The withdrawal of Parry Sound has reduced the field to 10, headed by last Saturday's Tattersall's Cup runner-up Mirage Dancer and wet track specialist Wu Gok for Chris Waller

If Stockman runs to expectations and comes through the race in good order, Pride will consider pressing on to the Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 8.

"We'll just see how he comes through it, but I wouldn't rule it out," Pride said.
