Bello Beau makes impact on debut

Astute trainer Adam Trinder is no stranger to debuting smart two-year-olds in feature races and he was at it again in Hobart on Wednesday with well-bred youngster Bello Beau.

Bello Beau stepped out for the first time in the $30,000 Alexandra Plate over 1100 metres and the gelding delivered a stellar effort to comfortably account for the previously unbeaten Geegee Jet By.

The gelded son of Brazen Beau-Bella Princess went into the race on the back of an impressive trial win at Longford earlier this month and he took that form into his debut outing.

From barrier one jockey Brendon McCoull allowed Bello Beau ($2.40) to find the lead and after being challenged soon after the start by Sistine ($7), McCoull urged his charge to hold that filly out, and he hit the home turn with a lap full of horse.

When Geegee Jet By ($1.90) emerged to challenge it looked as if the punters' favourite would go on and win, but Adam Trinder's youngster had something in reserve and cruised to the line a comfortable winner over the favourite.

Owner Wayne Roser was elated with the win.

"We were quietly confident he would run well because he had a very good jump out and then he won a trial quite impressively, so there was a lot of up-side to the horse," Roser said.

"It was primarily an educational outing to get him used to travelling and see how they can handle it and today he did all the right things."

Roser confirmed the Listed $100,000 Elwick Stakes is the gelding's main mission and that will be run in Hobart on 23 January.

"We hope this horse is going to be up to an Elwick Stakes and this is a nice start to his preparation."

McCoull said Bello Beau had natural ability and could have a bright future.

"It was a very good effort to travel down to Hobart for his first start and do what he did against a very good one in Geegee Jet By," McCoull said.

"You never know how a young horse will react under pressure, but I got the impression from his trial that he was a very genuine little horse and today he showed that."

Roser ended the day with a double courtesy of his four-year-old Warrior Prince (Erica Byrne Burke) leading throughout to win the Tasmanian Bloodstock Benchmark 68 Handicap over 1200m.
