Weekend wrap: Lombardo's listed triumph, local claims Mt Gambier Cup

3 minute read

Promising Victorian sprinter Lombardo extended his affinity with Adelaide and put his hand up for a tilt at some of SA upcoming sprint features during the carnival winning Saturday’s Listed Manihi Classic at Morphettville.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper was impressive holding off Rock The Ring in the feature, his fourth win from as many starts on SA soil, with former local apprentice Zac Spain in the saddle.

Billed as a two-horse race, the Manihi panned out as expected with Lombardo and Rock The Ring locked in battle on the home turn before Lombardo's fitness edge proved decisive in the run to the line.

"He flew the barriers,'' Spain said.

"I just wanted to ride him how he likes to be ridden and that's just on pace and keep building.

"He's a big awkward horse, he still doesn't know how to gallop properly,'' he said.

Spain said despite being challenged strongly on the turn, Lombardo packed plenty of punch in the run to the line.

"When I let go of him, he really let down,'' Spain said.

"He's got a lot of improvement (left), he's in for a really good prep,'' he said.

It was the second leg of a riding double for Spain who won the opening race aboard Designs for Anthony and Sam Freedman. Spain shared riding honours with Jake Toeroek who was successful aboard Vampire Slayer and Somewatt Fabulous.

It was a busy few days of SA racing, with local galloper Clever Man claiming at upset win in Friday's Mount Gambier Gold Cup for trainer Trevor White. Paul Gatt got Clever Man over the line on Friday, before the in-form jockey picked up a riding double at Gawler on Sunday.
