Donut for dessert in Devonport

3 minute read

Punters will have to wait until the last race of the day but track specialist Square Donut appeals as the best bet on the nine-race card in Devonport on Sunday.

Square Donut has never missed a place on the Tapeta surface with his record standing at seven starts for two wins, three seconds and two thirds. He was a little unlucky when he resumed at the track a fortnight ago finishing third behind Ring Of Honour beaten 1.5 lengths.

"Approaching the 100m mark Square Donut was placed in restricted room and bumped on several occasions," stewards reported.

While the margin was too great for a protest, there's no doubt Square Donut should have finished closer.

On Sunday, the 6YO will take on a class 3 over 1350m. His last win was in September last year in the same class over the same distance at the same track. He's drawn barrier six and will be ridden by fly-in jockey Anthony Darmanin.

"He got knocked down with a furlong to go the other day, I thought it was nearly going to win the race. He's drawn a good barrier and hopefully will get the same sort of run one out and one back and be really hard to beat," Darmanin said.

While Darmanin may well finish the day on a winner, there's every chance he could the start the day same way. 'Darma' will ride Reward For Rosie in the first race, the Goodstone Group Maiden (1350m).

Last start Reward For Rosie flashed home from last on the home turn to run second in what was an eye-catching run and she should appreciate the extra 200m of Sunday's race.

"I thought she was really good the other day, she got a long way back, stepping up to the 1350m will definitely suit and the way she hit the line I can see her running home over the top of them.

"The only query is barrier one but we will get back and hopefully with a bit of luck get home," trainer Glenn Stevenson said.

Stevenson has added blinkers for the first time to Reward For Rosie.

Another to look for early in the program is Miss Chica Mala who should break her maiden status in the third race.

The Stuart Gandy-trained filly has been runner-up at her past two starts and her run in Hobart last week was a beauty. She crossed from a wide barrier, sat outside the leader and finished almost four lengths ahead of the third horse.

She is yet to race on the Devonport track but did trial on the synthetic surface last October finishing second.

Sunday's program also sees apprentice Catherine Van Munster making her riding debut aboard Alpine Legend for her boss John Luttrell in race 4.

It's an early start with the first race set down for 11:15 and the last at 16:00.
