Trainer aware of her promise

3 minute read

It may have been only a mid-winter maiden, but Global Awareness showed she could develop into a more than handy stayer with a narrow but impressive win in Hobart on Sunday.

Global Awareness defied a betting drift and a track that favoured horses up on the speed to come from worse than midfield near the home turn to win the 1600m Maiden.

After being backed initially from $3.60 into $3.10, Global Awareness blew in the betting to close at $4.40 and paid $4.80 on the tote.

The 3YO filly was having just her fourth race start and her first try at 1600m.

"She's out of a Tassie Oaks winning mare so I think a step up to 2000m would do her no harm," trainer Scott Brunton said.

"I think she's quite a nice horse."

Her mother Global Balance won the Oaks in 2013 and then won at Group 3 level in South Australia.

Brunton later made it a double for the day when Street Tough, another market drifter ($5 to $8.50) enjoyed a peach of a ride from apprentice Taylor Johnstone to win the 1400m BM68.

The double has almost assuredly sealed the trainers' premiership for Brunton who has dominated the title since he won his first when co-training with his father David in 2009/10.

With just three meetings remaining, Brunton has 64 winners, eight ahead of John Blacker with Adam Trinder third on 49.

Jockeys' battle tightens up

The jockeys' premiership looks like it will go down to the wire. David Pires (Global Awareness and Scardimalia) rode a double to join Brendon McCoull on 50 wins with Siggy Carr on 47.

Scardimalia also showed she could be above average with another impressive win making it two-from-two this campaign and three from seven starts overall when she won the fillies and mares BM64 (1200m).

Scardimalia ($4 to $3.40) jumped from the outside gate in the field of 14 but began well, sat second and forged to the front near home to win from Move On Over ($3 fav) and $5 chance Day Performer.

Treble for Bulent

While Pires rode a double, Bulent Muhcu took riding honours with a treble. Muhcu rode Berserker ($9 into $6) to win the 1400m class 1 for Stephen Shaw and then rode two winners for Gary White with Jackjack ($13) showing a liking for the longer trip winning at his first try over 2100m. The pair then combined with Johnny Chutzpah ($19) who bounced back to form with a strong win in the Open Hcp (1200m).

White has always had a good opinion of Johnny Chutzpah who has won five of 14 starts since joining the stable two years ago.

Siggy Carr stayed in touch with the jockey premiership leaders when she trained and rode the heavily backed Rue De Palais ($2 fav) who led all the way to win the opening race of the day, while the longest priced winner belonged to dual code trainer Adrian Duggan with Under His Eye who knocked many out of the quadrella winning the first leg at $23.
