It's all mapped out for Clarken & MacGillivray stable

3 minute read

Talented South Australian stayer The Map is set to resume at Morphettville on Saturday week ahead of her tilt at the 2023 Adelaide Cup.

The Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray-trained mare ticked all the boxes required in a 1000m trial at Oakbank on Tuesday morning and Clarken said the horse would have her first run for the year in the $120,000 JRA Plate (2000m).

The Map was slow into stride and settled last in the field of five before she worked home strongly to be beaten a tick over a length in the trial with apprentice Tala Hutchinson in the saddle.

"She trialled beautiful,'' Clarken said.

"We wanted to go to a 1400m trial, but there was only a couple in that, and I was worried she wouldn't get a solid hit-out doing that, so we went around in the first trial over 1000m,'' he said.

The Map hasn't raced since running fourth in the Skybeau Series Final at Morphettville in November which followed her brilliant win over 2800m at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day with Jamie Kah  in the saddle.

"She had a week and a half in the paddock, but in that time she was still swimming, we kept her moving,'' Clarken said.

"We did look at the Bagot (Handicap) but thought we can't do everything, so she'll kick off in the JRA Plate, go to the Lord Reims and then Adelaide Cup.

"She's showed a bit of zest late in both trials, she's sharp and she looks amazing! We're thrilled with where she is at,'' he said.

Stablemate Thirsty Guest also rolled around Oakbank winning his trial and is set to target the Listed C S Hayes Memorial Cup at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day.

"He'll be aimed towards the mile feature on Cup Day,'' Clarken said.

"There is a 1400m race on the Parks for him leading in, he looks well and trialled up very nicely this morning,'' he said.
