Sydney Specials: Randwick – April 7

3 minute read

It’s Doncaster Day tomorrow at Randwick and the ten race card does not disappoint.

The ten race card is largely comprised of capacity fields with the showpiece clearly the Group 1 Doncaster Mile.

The entire meeting features a host of value through it however looking for a best bet on the card, it’s hard to go past Redzel contesting the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

Set to be crowned Australia’s Champion Sprinter for season 2017/18, Redzel lines up in the TJ Smith Stakes off winning the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m).

The son of Snitzel on that occasion broke the track record on that occasion and has since been kept ticking over with a Randwick trial win.

After winning The Everest and the Darley Classic during the spring, the Team Snowden-trained sprinter looks poised to add Sydney’s Group 1 sprint feature to his tally.

The TJ Smith Stakes is a noted favourite’s race with six of the past ten favourites delivering in the event.

Redzel has proven his class over most of the rivals he faces here time and time again through the past 12 months.

He can do so again on Saturday.

In terms of value, Vin De Dance shapes as a big chance of claiming the NZ Derby – Australian Derby double.

Fourth on protest but second across the line in the Rosehill Guineas, it was an ideal Australian Derby trial.

The son of Roc De Cambes raced a shade on the fresh side early however kept finding the line at the business end of proceedings, beating all bar D’Argento who instead of contesting the Derby has dropped back in trip to the Doncaster Mile.

NZ stayers have dominated the Australian Derby, in particular ones trained by Murray Baker with Nom Du Jeu (2008), It’s A Dundeel (2013), Mongolian Khan (2015) and Jon Snow (2017) raiding prior Sydney autumns.

Baker in partnership with Andrew Forsman saddle up four runners in the event on Saturday and Vin De Dance shapes as the pick of them.

The 2017 Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winning colt Trapeze Artist took out his second Group One success in most impressive fashion here. He began well but was caught wide in sixth place (with cover), before moving up strongly rounding the home turn. He then sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 100m before drawing away to score by a decisive margin and in fast time (1:08.29). Favourite Redzel showed his renowned pace to lead, travelled well prior to dashing clear at the 300m. He then found the late-closing winner (whom he conceded 2kg) too good to finish second after running a bold race. In Her Time settled back in last place in the 11-horse field, went along the inner on straightening but was blocked shortly afterwards. She got along the rails from the 150m and made late ground to take a good third, looking somewhat unlucky.
